Grading
Australian converters are
differentiated based on their “Sizes” into different grades as
follows,
Jumbo
-Jumbo size converters from BMW & Mercedes cars
Catalyst content: average 1.5 Kg of ceramic honeycomb
Large - Large size
converters from cars with large engines like V6 and above. Example: Mazda
626, some exotic Japanese and European cars
Catalyst content: average 1.3 Kg of ceramic honeycomb
Regular –
Regular size converters from cars with large engines like V6.
Example:
Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon etc

Small – Small size
converters from cars with smaller
engines like V4 and below. Example: Mazda 121, Toyota Corolla, Daewoo
Matiz etc
Catalyst Content: average 500 gms of ceramic honeycomb
Cast Iron – small converters attached to the
manifold on the engine, mostly with a cast iron casing in old cars.
Example:
Converters from
Japanese import cars - Nissan, Toyota etc

Aftermarket – Replacement converters which have
substituted OEM standard fitting for various reasons like converter failure,
Tuning etc. A new aftermarket converter can be purchased for an average of
$80. These converters have extremely low
recycling value due to aftermarket
quality.
Catalyst content: average of 450 gms of ceramic honeycomb

The Mix
The converters that we see
today are from cars that were manufactured during 1990’s and based on the
statistics of the cars sold in the Australian market around the 90’s
and from our experience, the expected mix can be
defined as follows
Jumbo
- approx. 1 %
Large
- approx. 3 %
Regular
-
approx. 75 %
Small
- approx.
15 %
Cast Iron
- approx.
1 %
Aftermarket
- approx.
5 %
The price for the mix is calculated based on the prices
and the average percentages of the different grades.
